Why Chamitha Founded Lessons2Drive

After years working inside the VicRoads system as a Licence Testing Officer, Chamitha Lokuwithana saw something that troubled him: good, capable drivers were failing their tests — not because they couldn't drive, but because they hadn't been taught the way the test actually works.

He watched students arrive nervous and under-prepared, trained by instructors who taught habits, not understanding. Meanwhile, other students were passing tests despite making errors that genuinely put road users at risk.

He knew the system from the inside. He knew every assessment criterion, every decision a tester makes, every moment in a test where the outcome turns. And he knew that this knowledge — in the hands of a genuine instructor — could change everything for learners.

So he founded Lessons2Drive. Not to teach students how to pass a test, but to build real drivers — confident, safe, and prepared for the road long after the test day is over.

Today, every lesson at Lessons2Drive carries that same philosophy: understand the why, not just the what.

I've sat on the other side of the car for over 1,800 tests. I know what a tester is looking for — and more importantly, I know what builds a genuinely safe driver. That's what I teach.

VicRoads Career

Inside VicRoads — From Day One to Senior Level

Chamitha's career at VicRoads wasn't just as a Licence Testing Officer. He built a deep, end-to-end understanding of how Victoria's entire licensing and registration system works — from the inside.

1
Joined VicRoads

Casual Staff — Licence Testing Officer

Chamitha joined VicRoads directly as a casual Licence Testing Officer — conducting official drive tests and assessing applicants against Victoria's Drive Test criteria.

2
Within 6 Months

Made Permanent — Recognised for Outstanding Performance

Based on outstanding customer service and fast learning ability, Chamitha was offered a permanent position at VicRoads within just six months — a recognition of the exceptional standard he brought to every role.

3
Promotion

Senior Customer Service Officer

Promoted to Senior Customer Service Officer, Chamitha received comprehensive training across the full range of VicRoads licensing services — including driver licences, vehicle registration, car transfers, number plate services, and more. This gave him a complete, inside understanding of how Victoria's entire licensing system operates.

4
Contributed to VicRoads

Trained New Licence Testing Officers & Route Design

Chamitha contributed to the training of new Licence Testing Officers within VicRoads, and was involved in the drive test route design and assessment process at Werribee — helping shape the very test routes that applicants drive today.

Founded

Lessons2Drive Driving School

Chamitha left VicRoads to found Lessons2Drive — bringing everything he learned inside the system directly to his students. Every lesson is shaped by real VicRoads experience that no textbook can replicate.

When It Mattered Most, We Showed Up

This is something no other driving school in Victoria can offer. Because Chamitha spent years as a VicRoads Licence Testing Officer, he knows the Drive Test criteria inside out — every page, every clause, every real-world situation the book doesn't fully cover. When a student is failed incorrectly, he doesn't just accept it. He acts.

That same depth of knowledge shows in our results. Every student Lessons2Drive assesses as ready for their Drive Test passes first time — without exception. We don't send students to test until we are certain they are prepared. The Drive Test holds no surprises for our students, because the person teaching them helped design the routes and wrote assessments for over 1,800 applicants. Here are three real cases where Chamitha stood by his students when it mattered most.
1
Ankita
Werribee VicRoads — Drive test intervention during the test

During Ankita's drive test, a situation arose on the road that didn't match the textbook description exactly. The tester made a call to fail her — but Chamitha, riding as the accompanying instructor, recognised immediately that the criteria had been misapplied.

Drawing on his years as a VicRoads Licence Testing Officer — and his precise knowledge of the Drive Test criteria manual — Chamitha calmly and professionally pointed the tester to the exact criteria, explaining why the situation did not meet the threshold for a fail.

The tester considered the point and agreed to continue. A short time later, a second similar situation arose. Again, the tester called a fail. Again, Chamitha identified the error and raised it, referencing the criteria directly. Again, the tester agreed the assessment was incorrect and the test continued.

Ankita completed her test and passed. She would have been failed twice — incorrectly — without Chamitha's expertise and willingness to speak up.

Incorrect fail overturned — twice — during the test. Ankita passed.
2
Jack
Werribee VicRoads — Formal escalation, written complaint, licence issued

With less than one minute remaining in Jack's drive test, the tester marked an Immediate Termination Error — ending the test and recording a fail. Chamitha, who was present, believed the call was incorrect based on his knowledge of the Drive Test criteria.

Following proper VicRoads procedure, Chamitha and Jack returned to the VicRoads office and spoke with the manager to raise the concern. On this occasion, the manager upheld the tester's decision. Chamitha chose not to push further in person — he was mindful of professional courtesy with his former VicRoads colleagues.

That evening, Chamitha went home and wrote a detailed formal email to VicRoads management. He cited the exact pages and criteria from the Drive Test manual, explained precisely why the assessment was incorrect, and outlined what the tester should have observed and recorded instead.

The following morning, VicRoads responded with a formal apology. Jack's test result was amended to a Pass, his licence was issued, and VicRoads offered a refund for the test fee.

VicRoads apologised in writing. Jack's result changed to Pass. Refund issued.
3
Gangani
Werribee VicRoads — On-the-spot reversal by VicRoads manager

After Gangani's drive test concluded, the tester — a relatively new officer — marked a fail. Chamitha, present as the accompanying instructor, identified that the tester's assessment was based on an incorrect reading of the situation and the Drive Test criteria.

He raised the concern with the tester directly and professionally, providing a clear explanation of the criteria. The tester, being less experienced, was not willing to change the assessment on the spot.

Following VicRoads procedure, Chamitha and Gangani went directly to the VicRoads centre manager and put the case formally. Chamitha laid out the assessment criteria, the specific situation, and why the fail marking was incorrect.

The manager reviewed the case and immediately reversed the decision. Gangani's licence was issued on the spot, without the need for any further test.

Manager reversed the tester's decision immediately. Gangani's licence issued on the day.

These Three Are Not the Only Times

More than 10 additional cases — resolved during the test

The three cases above reached formal escalation. But there are more than ten additional situations where Chamitha intervened professionally during a drive test, spoke with the tester, and had an incorrect fail marking corrected — right there, on the road, before the test even concluded.

In each case, the approach was the same: calm, professional, and grounded in a precise knowledge of the Drive Test criteria manual — knowledge that only comes from years spent as a VicRoads Licence Testing Officer.

No other driving school instructor in Melbourne's western suburbs carries this depth of insider knowledge. And no other school has this track record of standing up for students when it counts.

What You Get That Other Schools Can't Offer

Every lesson at Lessons2Drive is shaped by years of experience on the other side of the test — as the person making the assessment.

Criteria knowledge, not guesswork

Chamitha knows the Drive Test criteria manual in precise detail — every threshold, every real-world nuance, every situation the book doesn't fully describe. That knowledge shapes every lesson.

You have someone in your corner

If something goes wrong on your test day, you're not alone. You have an instructor who will review the assessment with professional knowledge — and act if the outcome isn't right.

Taught the why, not just the what

You'll understand the reason behind every manoeuvre, every check, every decision. That understanding builds real confidence — not just test-day performance.

Trained to the same standard

Every instructor at Lessons2Drive is either an Ex-VicRoads Licence Testing Officer or trained directly under Chamitha to that same standard. There's no variation in quality.

Our Promise

What Lessons2Drive Stands For

We are not building a driving school that competes on price. We are building the most trusted driving school name in Melbourne — one student, one lesson, one life-changing result at a time.

We Are Student-Obsessed, Not Competitor-Obsessed

We don't spend a single minute watching what other driving schools are doing. Every minute goes into one question: what does this student need, right now, to become a safe and confident driver for life? That focus is what separates us.

Our Reputation Is Built Entirely by Our Students

We don't run advertising campaigns to tell people how good we are. Our 304 five-star Google reviews are written by real students — unprompted, unedited, freely given. That is the only reputation that matters. You don't earn that with marketing. You earn it lesson by lesson.

We Solve the Problem Nobody Else Is Solving

Good drivers in Melbourne are failing their tests because their instructors don't truly understand what VicRoads is assessing. We saw that problem from inside VicRoads. We built Lessons2Drive to fix it — not to make money from it, but to genuinely change the outcome for every student we teach.

The Standard We Hold Ourselves To

When you book with Lessons2Drive,
you are not buying a driving lesson.

You are investing in being taught by someone who has sat on the other side of the assessment — who has conducted over 1,800 official drive tests, who helped design the very routes you will drive, and who will stand by you on test day with the knowledge and confidence to speak up if something is not right.

No other driving school in Victoria can say this.
How We Think

Four Principles That Drive Everything We Do

Consistency Over Everything

Trust is not built in one great lesson. It is built by delivering the same quality, the same care, and the same commitment to every student, every single time — without exception.

Prepare Properly, Not Just Try Harder

Many students spend more time on lessons when what they really need is better teaching. We focus on preparing the right way — understanding the criteria, the roads, and the decision-making — so that every hour counts.

Trust Builds Its Own Momentum

A brand that truly earns trust becomes self-sustaining. Students refer their siblings, their friends, their children. That is how Lessons2Drive has grown — not through ads, but through results that people talk about.

Right Teaching Produces the Right Result

When a student is taught by someone who truly understands the system, in the right environment, with the right guidance — the result takes care of itself. We don't push students through. We build them up.

Our Mission
"To become the most trusted driving school brand in Australia — by teaching every student not just how to pass a test, but how to drive safely for life."
