Failed your VicRoads drive test?
We know exactly why.

While working as official VicRoads Licence Testing Officers, our instructors conducted over 1,800 drive tests. From that experience — seeing exactly why people fail, what testers look for, and what most driving schools never teach — we built the Lessons2Drive syllabus from the ground up. Every lesson we teach is based on real assessment experience from the other side of the clipboard.

The real truth
Failing the drive test is almost never about driving ability
After conducting over 1,800 official VicRoads drive tests, we saw the same reasons come up again and again. Most students who fail never get told the real reason.
01 Observation errors
Not checking the right mirror at the right moment. Looking in the wrong place during a blindspot check. Missing a pedestrian scan at traffic lights.
02 Slow reactions at traffic lights
When the light turns green, a long pause before moving is an immediately assessable item. Most learners don't even know this is being marked.
03 Incomplete lane change procedure
Missing one of the required steps. Checking the blindspot in the wrong direction. Signalling after rather than before the mirror check.
04 Causing others to take evasive action
This is an instant fail — and the most shocking part is that many students who cause it have no idea it even happened. Their observation was that poor.
A real story
120 hours. Failed twice. Dad thought his driving was perfect.
A father contacted us after his son failed the VicRoads drive test twice. Dad had personally taught him from the beginning. 120 hours logged. Dad had been driving in Australia for 10 years and was absolutely convinced his son's driving was beautiful. He was blaming VicRoads testers.

We came out for a one-hour assessment lesson — using the same marking criteria that VicRoads uses, we assessed his son's driving exactly as a tester would.

In that one hour, he failed 44 times.

Dad had taught him everything he knew. But Dad's driving had the same errors — he had just been surviving on the road. Within 3 targeted lessons we identified every issue, corrected the technique, and rebuilt it on the right foundation. He passed on his very next attempt.

3 Lessons to fix it all
How we fix it
What happens when you book with us
We don't just take you out driving and hope for the best. Every lesson follows a structured process — starting in the classroom before we get on the road.
1
Assessment lesson first
We take you through a full drive using the same marking criteria that VicRoads uses. After the lesson you receive a complete debrief — every item, pass or fail, with the reason why.
2
Classroom style teaching — using a whiteboard
Before we fix anything on the road, we sit down with a whiteboard and explain exactly what went wrong, why it fails, and what correct technique looks like. You understand the reason behind every action — not just a new instruction to follow.
3
Targeted practice on real test routes
We practice on the actual VicRoads test routes at your nearest test centre. You will know every intersection, every roundabout, every tricky spot before your test day.
4
Mock test with real marking
When you're ready, we run a full mock test using the actual VicRoads marking criteria. We only tell you you're ready when you actually are.
5
Warm-up lesson on test day
On the day of your drive test, we pick you up and do a warm-up lesson on the test route before your appointment. You arrive calm, warmed up, and confident — not cold and nervous.
Know before you go
What causes fails — and what passes every time
Most students who fail had no idea these things were even being assessed. We teach every one of these from day one.
What causes instant fails
Running a red light or stop sign

Dangerous lane change without observation
Mounting the kerb at speed
Slow reaction when traffic light turns green
Going over the speed limit
Failed to operate wipers or demisters on rainy days
What passes every time
Correct observation at every point, every time
All lane change steps done correctly
Alert at traffic lights — ready to move on green
Smooth, unhurried vehicle control throughout
Knowing the reason behind every action
Correct speed for the conditions at all times
Operating all vehicle controls correctly

What students who failed before say about us
★★★★★ "I've struggled with severe driving anxiety for the past 10 years and had almost given up on getting my licence. Thanks to him, I finally overcame my anxiety and passed my test." Xena Shrestha 10 years of driving anxiety. Multiple previous instructors. Passed with Lessons2Drive.

Common questions
Questions from students who've already failed
How many lessons will I need before I'm ready to try again?
It depends entirely on what caused your fail. After your first assessment lesson, we'll tell you honestly — some students need 2 lessons, some need 8. We will never tell you you're ready when you're not, and we will never sell you lessons you don't need.
My previous instructor said my driving was fine. Why did I fail?
Many instructors teach to a general driving standard rather than the specific VicRoads assessment criteria. Our instructors have sat in the tester's seat — we know exactly what is being marked and exactly what a tester sees that most drivers don't notice they're doing.
I failed 3 times. Is that too many times to fix?
Absolutely not. We've helped students who failed 3, 4 and 5 times. Failing multiple times usually means there are one or two specific issues that were never identified or corrected. Once we find them — and we always find them — they are fixable.
Can you use your car for my actual drive test?
Yes. All our drive test packages include the use of our dual-control car for your official VicRoads drive test appointment. Our cars are modern and fully insured for test purposes.
What is classroom style teaching?
Before we drive, we sit down with a whiteboard and explain exactly what is being assessed and why each action matters. You will always know the reason behind what you're doing — not just follow instructions blindly. This is why our students learn faster and retain correct technique long after the lesson.

Stop guessing why you failed.
