At Lessons2Drive Driving School, our goal is to prepare you to be a safe and legal driver in the shortest time possible. Safety isn’t just about passing the test; it’s about being a responsible and considerate member of the community. Nothing demonstrates this more clearly than how you respond to an emergency vehicle.

Giving way to emergency vehicles—like police cars, ambulances, and fire trucks—isn’t just a rule, it’s a crucial act of kindness and responsibility on the road.

Every Second Counts: The Real Cost of Obstruction

When you hear a siren or see flashing lights, those vehicles are rushing to save lives or contain a dangerous situation. Whether it’s a medical emergency, a house fire, or a serious accident, every single second counts.

Yet, every day in Victoria, there are drivers who fail to give way, obstructing the path of our everyday heroes. This hesitation, confusion, or failure to act can dramatically slow down response times, potentially changing the outcome for someone’s loved one who is waiting for urgent help.

We believe in fostering a community of safe and considerate drivers. Let’s make sure we always help our emergency services reach their destinations quickly.

The Rule: What Victorian Law Requires

As a driver in Victoria, the law is clear: you must move out of the path of an emergency vehicle displaying flashing blue or red lights or sounding an alarm.

⚠️ How to Give Way Safely:

  1. Stay Calm and Listen/Look: As soon as you hear a siren or see flashing lights, check your mirrors to identify the direction and speed of the vehicle.
  2. Signal and Move Left: If possible, signal and move immediately to the left of the road or highway. You must ensure you do this safely and legally.
  3. Stop Completely: Bring your vehicle to a complete stop and remain stopped until the emergency vehicle has passed completely.
  4. Avoid Dangerous Moves: Do not speed up, stop abruptly, or drive onto a median strip to get out of the way.

Important Note: If you are at traffic lights or an intersection, you are legally allowed to carefully drive past the stop line or red light to clear the path, but only if it is safe to do so. After the emergency vehicle passes, you must return to obeying the traffic signals.
